Absolut reaches recycled materials goal after its goal of using 50% recycled material in its glass bottles four years ahead of schedule. We tell you how he did it!

Late last year, Absolut, the Swedish vodka brand, announced that the production of its vodka products would be fossil fuel-free by 2025 , as part of a broader ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030 without relying on use of compensation.

According to edie , the company also aims to apply green design principles to reduce life cycle emissions from 50% of its projects by 2021 and 100% of new projects by 2022.

Part of this strategy also included the goal of using 50% recycled content in packaging by 2025, an ambition that has been met for glass bottles.

Absolut reaches goal of recycled materials
The circular economy is a key pillar of the company's sustainability strategy and will also help with efforts to reduce emissions.

The Absolut Company has tested 2,000 paper bottle prototypes in Sweden and the UK to prove the viability of paper as an alternative to single-use plastics in beverage applications.

In 2019, the Danish brewer Carlsberg unveiled prototypes of the world's first beer bottles made from recyclable and bio-based materials. Carlsberg will test the barrier technology with the ambition of being able to market a 100% bio-based bottle that does not contain polymers.


The move prompted the formation of Paboco: Paper Bottle Company , which is a joint venture between renewable materials company BillerudKorsnäs and plastic bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla.

On the day of its formation, Paboco launched a paper bottle community. The Absolut Company is one of the founding pioneers of this community and has joined forces with The Coca-Cola Company, Carlsberg and L'Oréal.
               


Commenting on the achievement, Absolut Vice President of Operations Anna Schreil said:

We have a close and long-term collaboration with our glass manufacturer Ardagh. Through weight reductions, increased use of recycled glass and other measures, we have reduced CO2 emissions from glass production by 10% in just five years and continue working to improve this even further.

Rigorous checks are carried out for each wheat delivery to ensure the correct moisture level and cleanliness of the wheat, to name just a few quality parameters. An important practice for their partner farmers is called crop rotation.
