This article is dedicated to a struggling güimarero who, overcoming a serious childhood condition that caused him a permanent disability, managed to make his way and work as a newsstand and ONCE coupon seller. But, apart from his work, for most of his life he developed an intense activity as a radio amateur, in which he took the name of Güímar to all corners of the world; He won numerous championships, awards and distinctions in amateur radio contests; and he attended national and international conventions or conferences.
He was co-founder of the Union of Disabled Radio Amateurs of Spain (URME), of which he was national secretary and delegate in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; He was also co-founder and first Email Marketing List president of the Union of Radio Amateurs of the Güímar Valley; and he was awarded the Silver Button and the Golden Button of the Union of Spanish Radio Amateurs. In addition, he was treasurer of the “ Estudiantes ” and “ Chimisay ” basketball clubs, as well as the Güímar Casino, a city where he gives his name to a square.
Our biographer was born in Aguamansa, in the municipality of La Orotava, on May 15, 1947, son of Don Raimundo and Doña Lucía, and was baptized in the main church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in said town. But, a victim of polio, the doctor who treated him advised a warmer climate, so when he was only six years old he settled in Güímar with his mother and two siblings: Don Máximo and Doña María Milagros (known as “Nena”), and in this city he would spend the rest of his life.
