1.23
She wrote: ‘And we thought 2017 was a big year! ‘Clarke and I are really excited that in June our team will expand from two to three, and that we'll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats.
‘I'll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be “first man of fishing” and stay-at-home dad. ‘I think it's fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn't be more excited.’Ardern, 37, became the country's youngest prime minister since 1856 when she formed her centre-left coalition government in October.“
1.23
The practice of boiling lobsters alive is common in seafood restaurants around the world, and stems from the belief that the crustaceans can't feel pain.
However, scientists are increasingly agreeing with animal rights advocates that crustaceans' nervous systems are sophisticated and complex enough for them to feel immense pain when boiled alive.
As part of a major overhaul of animal protection laws, Bern has now said that ‘the practice of plunging live lobsters into boiling water, which is common in restaurants, is no longer permitted'.
From March 1 this year, the government order said, lobsters 'will now have to be stunned before they are put to death’.
1.25
In the first part of Jonathan Swift’s book Gulliver’s Travels, Lemuel Gulliver washes ashore on the island country of Lilliput, where he encounters the Lilliputians, who stand barely taller than 15cm.
While Swift’s Lilliput is merely a fantasy, a comparable village exists in the eastern extremities of Iran. Up until around a century ago, some of the residents of Makhunik, a 1,500-year-old village roughly 75km west of the Afghan border, measured a mere metre in height – approximately 50cm shorter than the average height at the time.
In 2005, a mummified body measuring 25cm in length was found in the region. The discovery fuelled the belief that this remote corner of Iran, which consists of 13 villages, including Makhunik, was once home to an ancient ‘City of Dwarfs’. Although experts have determined that the mummy was actually a premature baby who died roughly 400 years ago, they contend that previous generations of Makhunik residents were indeed shorter than usual.
1.25
The American Lung Association says fewer Americans smoke cigarettes now than before tobacco control policies were put in place.
In its annual report, the ALA says smoking rates among adults and teens are at historic lows. On average, just over 15.5 percent of American adults and eight percent of high school students smoke cigarettes.
There's also peer pressure, and when friends or parents smoke, teens tend to take up the habit. Studies show that most people who smoke start before they are 18. Some start as young as age 11 according to The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Carr calls it a pediatric disease. "It starts in your teens and then once you’re hooked, you can’t get off of it."
