Yingying Zhang, 27-year old, was reported missing in areas around University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) since June 9th around 1:30 to 2:00 pm, 2017 (local time). She is from mainland China, and came to UIUC as a visiting scholar in late April 2017. She is around 5’3” tall, and 110 lb in weight. Her hair is in brownish color and a little curvy. When she was kidnapped, she wore a short-sleeve plaid shirt, light-blue jeans, and a pair of round glasses.

Yingying is new to UIUC, and she submitted her application for apartment rental to One North Apartment on June 8th. Soon, she got confirmed from the One North apartment that she can sign the lease at 1:30 pm on June 9th, and the manager of the leasing office further confirmed the time with Yingying on June 9th 9:15 pm. At June 9th 1 pm, Yingying headed out to the One North leasing office from her office at Turner Hall at UIUC. Since she doesn’t own a vehicle currently, she should plan to go to the leasing office by taking bus. At June 9th 1:30 pm, the leasing office manager texted her again to confirm her arrival time. Yingying replied back immediately that she will be late for a while, and will be at the office around 2:10 pm. At 2:38 pm, she still hasn’t showed up at the leasing office. The manager texted her again, but didn’t get any response. Her last phone activity was at Illinois Terminal at 2:30 pm June 9th, as reported by the University of Illinois Police.
Since then, Yingying cannot be reached by any possible contact method. Her friends and advisor at UIUC have called the police and sought for help from the Chinese Embassy at Chicago. The police confirmed that there was no accident reported in the local hospital, and Yingying has not left Champaign using bus, train or other public transportation tools. Moreover, she is very cautious, and will always notify her friends and advisor with her travel plan, so there is little chance that she has traveled outside of Champaign alone. Therefore, there is an extreme high possibility that Yingying has been kidnapped.
Yingying is a very lovely and enthusiastic young girl. She graduated from Sun-Yat University, China as a bachelor in 2013, and got her master degree in Peking University, China in 2016. She then worked as a visiting scholar in Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences until she came to UIUC in late April 2017. All her friends in US and China are greatly concerned about her safety. So far, during the last 48-hr loss of contact, local students, faculty members and church have self-organized numerous efforts to find her, including trying to locate her through her cell phone, seeking for help from social medias and local medias, posting fliers, and calling the police. Unfortunately, there is still not any useful clue that can help us to locate her right now.
The longer we wait, the higher possibility that Yingying get hurt. The first 72 hours are the golden time for us to rescue Yingying. Please help us to spread this message around. Moreover, we sincerely hope that if you lived in areas around Champaign IL, please join us and provide any clues that you think may be useful to find her. Your help may save a life of such an enthusiastic young girl who committed herself in the work of protecting our environment.
